Commitment to Sustainability
At Coastward Supply Co®, sustainability is not a marketing add-on. It is part of how we choose products, how we produce them, and how we ask our customers to care for them.
We are a small, founder-led apparel brand built around clarity, motion, and purpose. Our goal is simple: create intentional, minimal pieces that are comfortable, durable, and made with a lighter footprint wherever possible.
Made to Order, Not Made to Waste
Every Coastward product is made after an order is placed through our fulfillment partners. This made-to-order model helps reduce unnecessary inventory, overproduction, and unsold product waste.
Instead of producing large seasonal runs and guessing what might sell, we produce each piece with a clear destination: the person who ordered it. This approach may add a few production days, but it allows us to operate more intentionally and avoid creating excess stock.
Materials Chosen with Intention
Across our product line, we prioritize materials and supplier programs that support long-term wear, lower-waste production, and responsible sourcing.
Depending on the product, Coastward pieces may include:
- Organic cotton is used in selecting premium fleece and tee styles.
- Recycled polyester is used in selecting hoodies, hats, activewear, mesh panels, drawcords, and blended products.
- Cotton and recycled polyester blends chosen for durability, structure, comfort, and everyday performance.
- Supplier certification programs such as Fair Trade Certified™ facility participation and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 programs where stated on eligible products.
- Carbon-measured supplier programs such as C-FREE® / ClimeCo where stated on eligible products.
Because each product is different, we list material and standards information directly on individual product pages so customers can make informed choices.
Substantiated Impact Claims
We believe sustainability claims should be specific, clear, and easy to understand. Here is how we define the impact language used across Coastward:
- Made-to-order: Products are created after an order is placed, helping reduce the risk of overproduction, excess inventory, and unsold finished goods.
- Recycled polyester: Used in select products to reduce reliance on virgin polyester while maintaining performance, durability, stretch, and quick-dry characteristics.
- Organic cotton: Used in selecting products as a preferred cotton option where listed by the supplier or product program.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 supplier program: Indicates whether the product or supplier program is connected to textile testing standards for harmful substances where stated.
- Fair Trade Certified™ facility participation: Indicates a product is produced through a supplier program connected to Fair Trade Certified™ facility standards where stated.
- C-FREE® / ClimeCo carbon-measured supplier program: Indicates a supplier carbon-measurement program where stated. We do not describe these products as carbon-free or carbon-neutral unless that claim is specifically verified for the product.
- Plastic bottle impact claims: We only use bottle-equivalent claims when listed for the specific product. For example, The Coastward Movement Men’s Active Tee includes a product-level claim of saving approximately 15 500ml plastic bottles from landfills.
Built to Last Longer
The most responsible product is often the one you use the most and keep the longest. Coastward products are selected with durability, comfort, and repeat wear in mind.
Small-Batch Mindset
Coastward is not built around fast-fashion volume. We do not chase constant overproduction or disposable trend cycles. Our model is designed around intentional apparel: pieces that feel calm, useful, and wearable from season to season.
Our made-to-order process also means production usually takes several business days before shipping. We believe that slower, more intentional production is a worthwhile tradeoff when it helps reduce unnecessary waste.
What We Are Still Working On
Sustainability is a process, not a finish line. We are continuing to improve how we source, describe, and evaluate our products.
Our ongoing goals include:
- Expanding the number of products that use organic, recycled, or otherwise preferred materials.
- Improving product-level transparency around fiber content and supplier standards.
- Choosing durable blanks and decoration methods that support longer product life.
- Keeping our made-to-order model at the center of how we reduce unnecessary waste.
- Reviewing new partner and material options as Coastward grows.
Our Promise
We will keep our claims clear, specific, and product based.
We will not call every product sustainable simply because it carries the Coastward name. Instead, we will identify the real features that matter made-to-order production, responsible material choices, recycled or organic fiber content where applicable, durability, care, and verified supplier programs when available.
